What exactly is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on promoting overall well-being through natural and non-invasive methods. Naturopaths aim to address the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. In a session with a naturopath, individuals can expect a thorough assessment of their physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors. The naturopath will then create a personalized treatment plan that may include dietary recommendations, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes, and other natural therapies to support the body's innate healing abilities and improve the patient's health and vitality.

How many treatments are typically needed?

Depending on the concern, we usually recommend at least 3 sessions to begin to see impactful change but most patients start to see benefits after 1 session. As a general rule, a Naturopath will expect changes more quickly for acute and recent conditions and will expect a longer recovery period for chronic conditions.

Are naturopathic remedies and supplements regulated in Australia?

Naturopathic remedies and supplements are regulated in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), who similarly regulate the pharmaceutical industry, and adhere to the highest safety and efficacy regulations to ensure safety and quality standards are met.

  • The TGA follows a rigorous pre-market assessment process, where manufacturers must provide scientific evidence of safety, quality, and efficacy for their products before they can be legally sold.

  • Herbal medicines and supplements must undergo a formal evaluation and be listed or registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before they can be marketed.

  • The TGA also monitors post-market surveillance to ensure ongoing safety and quality.

  • This strict regulation generally results in higher product quality and safety standards.

This is contrary to other places in the world, like the USA, where supplements and herbs are only regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which does not require pre-market approval for dietary supplements. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products' safety and accurate labeling, but they can bring products to market without FDA approval.

The key difference in regulation has a significant impact on the quality of herbs and supplements available in each country:

  • In Australia, the TGA's rigorous pre-market assessment and post-market surveillance tend to result in higher overall quality and safety standards for herbal medicines and supplements.

  • In the USA, the regulatory approach places more responsibility on manufacturers, and this can lead to a wider range of product quality and safety, with some products meeting high standards while others may be subpar.
